Cooling diagnosis

A no-cool complaint is not automatically a refrigerant problem

Cooling capacity depends on airflow, refrigeration, heat rejection, electrical operation, controls, drainage, and the load on the building. Sandison documents thermostat demand, indoor and outdoor equipment operation, filter and coil condition, blower behavior, return and supply restrictions, condensate management, electrical components, line-set condition, and applicable temperature or pressure evidence. Adding refrigerant without identifying why the charge is low does not repair a leak, and replacing a capacitor does not correct an overheated attic, restricted duct system, or failing motor.

The recommendation separates an immediate repair from the condition of the whole system

A successful service call should explain what failed, what contributed to it, and what remains. Sandison distinguishes a component repair from maintenance needs, airflow corrections, drainage risk, refrigerant-leak investigation, electrical work, or replacement planning. Equipment age and refrigerant type are considered, but they do not replace operating evidence. When a system can be restored safely, the repair path is explained; when continued operation presents poor reliability or disproportionate cost, the owner receives the reasons and connected-system requirements behind the replacement option.

What property owners ask

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?

Restricted airflow, dirty coils, electrical faults, controls, and refrigeration problems are among the conditions that need to be separated. The affected rooms, thermostat demand, and indoor and outdoor operation guide the inspection.

Will adding refrigerant fix my air conditioner?

Refrigerant should be evaluated alongside airflow and operating measurements. If the system has lost refrigerant through a leak, adding charge alone leaves the source of that loss unresolved.

Why does my AC problem come and go?

Intermittent faults may depend on equipment temperature, electrical operation, controls, drainage, or changing load. Note the weather, time, thermostat setting, and which equipment was running when the problem occurred.
